Don’t Fear It, Embrace It: ChatGPT in an Upper-Level Chemistry Communication Course

Principal Investigator: Chris Addison, Associate Professor of Teaching, Chemistry

Project description

This project will have three components: (1) The applicants will develop a set of classroom materials that offer “training” module in the use of ChatGPT (coupled with an existing unit on academic integrity). (2) Incorporation of ChatGPT into a major writing assignment, where students will compare their original writing to a ChatGPT-generated version. (3) Survey and focus groups of students who complete the classroom module to assess their level of comfort using ChatGPT pre/post, how the use of ChatGPT influenced their writing practice, and if they can identify discipline-specific errors made by the program.

Research questions

  • To what extent are students comfortable using ChatGPT and AI as a tool in communication?
  • Does training with the tool enhance that comfort?
  • In what ways can ChatGPT be used by students to reflect on and improve their own writing practices?
  • Can students recognize the limitations of AI tools in chemical communication, and can they correct errors?
